April 27th, 2003 a group of about 11 of us were sledding into Box
Lake a
back country lake in Valley County, Idaho. We
had gotten split up, separated into 2 groups. The first group made
it to the lake and sat waiting for the rest to arrive, at one point
almost leaving to go find the rest of the group, luckily they showed
up just in time. After eating lunch we debated whether to head home or stay
and play, the weather just wasn't conducive to seeing where you were
going. We headed around the corner, to do some climbing on the other
end of the lake only to find a plane upside down on
the frozen lake!
The pilot was heading into his back country cabin when a storm
caught him off guard. His wings froze up and he had no choice but to
try and land on this frozen lake. As he landed, he ended up
flipping. He had been there for 2 days when we found him. He had
tried to snow shoe out, with home made shoes, but quickly realized
he was going the wrong way and returned to his plane. He was not due
back home for 3 more days, therefore no one was missing him YET.
We gathered him up and took him home. He had a broken nose and
some busted ribs, a very lucky man. The ride out was not the easiest
on him due to these injuries, but at one point he was smiling and
enjoying the adventure out.
